For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

brynndragon: (Bad Idea)
I just had a horrible idea: a filk called The Devil Went Down to the Internet, involving musical internet memes instead of traditional American fiddle tunes. My fiddle skills are not up to actually doing it, but I'm pretty sure it would have to involve Nyan Cat, Hamster Dance, and Numa Numa.

Remember my repost about the 16-year-old runaway? I wanted to let folks know she's been found (via retweet, so I'll no longer say Twitter can't do anything useful ;P) and her mom is picking her up. Yay!

[info]bifemmefatale's 16-year-old daughter ran away. Her mother says: "Friends say she hopped a Megabus to the Carbondale, IL area to attend the upcoming Rainbow Gathering Oct. 1. She may change her destination if she knows she is being looked for. She's supposedly traveling with 2 guys named Tim and Josh, both Caucasian, early 20s or late teens, one with a "cholo tear" tattoo near his eye. She's 5'5", 120#, reddish-blonde hair, long bangs and sidelocks, short in back, always wears her jean vest with studs and patches on it. She may be begging for spare change. If you see her, *please* contact me and the police! 16 is too young to be running around the country on her own. I'm very worried for her safety. Thanks in advance."

If I never see another poorly designed survey about non-mainstream sexuality posted by someone without research cred who claims to not understand how LJ works technically (let alone the social etiquette here), it will be too damn soon.

With the help of the EFF, we are now officially allowed to use Downfall parodies to make fun of Apple losing its ability to control with an iron fist the apps and providers we have for our iPhones. If I had any vid-making powers I would totally make that vid right the hell now.

Adobe, I know you're trying to be helpful, but having Webmd.com (try to) pop up when I click on random phrases/keywords in my Western Path notes (which are in .pdf format) is actually kinda creepy. I'm really glad my anti-virus software caught it and let me block it, because now is entirely not the time for Reader to be linking to websites with only a slight change in the pointer to let me know it's going to happen (no underline, no color change in the text, because it's nothing in that file that's doing it - it's purely Reader-driven).

(noticed because of my nervous habit of repeatedly highlighting-unhighlighting whenever I read off a monitor, probably the #1 reason I use popup-blockers in general)

Apparently Yelp is being sued for a form of high-tech extortion: pay us a monthly fee or there will be a lot of bad reviews of your business on our site. It's not clear if they're offering to remove legitimate negative reviews or threatening to putting up fake negative reviews/specifically bumping up negative reviews. One of the plantiffs is Grover Taylor, the owner of Eat at Jumbo's, which has fantastic burgers and gravy fries in addition to the wings for which they are known. The one time they mixed up my order (failure to give me potato salad instead of potato chips with my burger) they were very apologetic and prompt in fixing the mistake. Today the Globe put Taylor front and center in their report on the subject.

This is a problem with post-dot-com internet businesses - people having to be very creative in finding ways to make money, and sometimes that creativity turns out to be really Wrong. I wonder if those sales guys work mainly on commission. . .

Apparently music made while on acid + swinging the notes = a march. Huh!

(you too can hear White Rabbit (meets the March Hare) here - just scroll down; the rest are also a lot of fun ;)

There's been an update to the "not like this" link in my post about Google Buzz. She's downgraded her "Fuck" to "Screw", to indicate that they hadn't quite fucked up as hard as it looked.

I just want to point out this line from the project manager of Buzz: We’re sorry that the product experience was extremely confusing. . . Confusing? CONFUSING?!? It was downright terrifying for stalked/abused women (and men, but if more men were (known/accepted as being) stalked I bet you cash money they'd've done things rather differently). I still thinks this qualifies as Evil, but at least it's not the physically-dangerous-to-your-users sort of Evil.

If you're wondering why I just unfollowed/blocked you on Google Buzz, don't take it personally - I've unfollowed/blocked everyone until Google can figure out how privacy works (a hint: not like this). If you want to do that yourself, just click on the Buzz link (mine is on the left side above the Inbox link) and click "Edit" at the top to change the name (because OMG my full real name was attached to my non-real-name Gmail account and multiple other people's real names/Gmails for days and I didn't even know - until just now I never even clicked on anything to do with Buzz, much less posted anything), then click on the "has $foo followers" to block people and "is following $foo" to unfollow people.
