Sometimes you get these video game cravings. . .

I want a building/farming/crafting/creation game and I want it now. I'm tempted to make a free account for A Tale in The Desert just to scratch that itch, then create a paid account when Bastet Shard opens in a few days and either joint T5 when it begins or stick around on Bastet, depending on how the shard experiment goes.

Alternatively, does anyone have such a game they can recommend? (The Harvest Moon series has that annoying deadline thing that takes the fun out of it)

I think ATITD is an awesome game *if* you are into multiplayer (I really enjoyed ATITD except for the people interaction part). Do you know of anything that's ATITD like but single-player?

[identity profile] benndragon.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
There are times when I really enjoy the multi-player aspect and times when I am Not In The Mood. So I too would love to hear non-MM alternatives (admittedly there are things one can do without too much interaction in ATITD, but I like to have options :).

It's so so so much more efficient to share buildings, and the economic backbone isn't setup well to be able to really specialize unless you've got a semi-socialist setup. So (IMO) the "right" way to play it is in guilds. If I could ignore that, I could probably enjoy playing it single player :-}.

I have a Wii game (Rune Factory, I think) that you could borrow for a try.

[identity profile] benndragon.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading the Wikipedia entry, that sounds pretty darn perfect. Could I come by and borrow it tonight? I can offer Okami for you to borrow in turn, if'n you'd like :).

Sure - come on by. We're home now, but talking about food.

The irony is that Civ5 got announced today.

[identity profile] caulay.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
And now to wait for it to come out.

I think I shall dig out my Civ 4 disks and waste timeplay with it again.

And Firaxis is doing a Civ game for Facebook.

That might have been what set off this craving, although I'm itching for something with more granularity (home-builder rather than world-builder).

[identity profile] benndragon.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Erm, you mean the series with the annoying deadlines as noted in my parenthetical comment after asking the question I think you're answering? *is confused*

...ohai, reading fail.  *facepalm*

...wait, how do multiple people know about this?  I swear.

OTOH, turns out the guy who did Harvest Moon made a game that not only lacks the annoying deadlines but adds dungeon crawls (dungeons you can plant crops in! I kid you not). A friend lent it to me and it is hella addicting.

Not quite in your desired genre, but I'll mention that some people I know ([livejournal.com profile] cthulhia for one) really like Kingdom of Loathing.

Limited moves per day sorta defeats the purpose of playing intensely until break ends ;P.

I really enjoyed both Braid and Torchlight recently.

[identity profile] benndragon.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither of those seem like making/farming/building games - Torchlight looks like a pretty standard "kill things in dungeons" game (which is great, but entirely not the genre I'm seeking) and Braid is a platform-puzzle game. Are those the games you meant or are they merely games with the same/similar name?

Those are, and I misread your post. Sorry about that.

However, both are fun. ;)

What console(s) do you have at home?

If you have an XBox 360 A Kingdom for Keflings might fit the bill.

You manage little people, and build buildings. It's sorta sanboxy and it sorta has goals. But there's no real rush to do anything.

It's fully playable solo but you can also play with friends over XBox live.

That looks awesome, but sadly the only console I have is a Wii.

OK, PC titles then.

Dawn of Discovery may be up your alley (I got my copy off of Steam).

Or (and you may be able to find a 'free' version on-line) something from The Settlers series may hold your interest.

I believe both games can be set up to run with and without NPC conflict.

I don't have an actual serious suggestion but this post is making me want to play Oregon Trail.

This, particularly the link in the upper left just above the screenshots, may be of interest.
