Science as God

Triggered by a post a friend of mine made:
Would someone please tell me why it is that things that are outside the realm of science are viewed as lesser? Why it is that people put science on a pedestal and worship it as they would a God? People, science is just a method for examining the universe, it is not the be-all-end-all of human existence! You don't need to go about forcing things that aren't science into science classrooms in order to "prove" that It's Science, Therefore It's Good! It's really OK for people to believe things that don't qualify as valid scientific theory! If we didn't have this stupid notion that things that aren't scientific aren't valid, we wouldn't be having this whole Intelligent Design debacle in the first place! People would discuss intelligent design and materialism in philosophy classes and they'd discuss the scientific examination of evolution in science classroom and Christians can learn about how God created the universe in Sunday school and Pastafarians can learn about how we are all held in His Noodly Appendages in their religious classes and everyone would be happy!
(Actually, I am interested in a serious discussion of how the whole ID thing demonstrates a basic lack of understanding of what science is and is not amongst people in general. I've also got a notion about how ID is a horribly misguided attempt at restoring a balance between right-brained logical thinking and left-brained intuitive understanding within our culture, but it's not very coherent yet.)
