I made it home safe and sound, but apparently I brought either food poisoning or a stomach bug back with me. So I'm cancelling the last Rockin' Wednesday of the year. Next year we will Rock again!

[Error: unknown template qotd]

I do a mixture of things:

If I manage to catch it before it really begins, I'll take the white parts of a bunch of scallions and some ginger root and makes a tea/soup out of it (consuming the bulbs and ginger root along with the water they've steeped in). This is based on the Chinese pharmacopia. If I'm not quite that swift, I'll start in on the zinc lozenges ASAP. (This one is backed by science - tl;dr version, they reduce the duration of a cold if started within the first 24 hours).

While the cold is in full swing, what I do depends on what I need to do. If I need to do work, I'll see if OTC meds will keep the symptoms under control. Otherwise I'll skip the meds in favor of a hot toddy (alcohol + honey + heat = thinner mucus and less sore throat; it's a traditional cold remedy for a reason) and lots of tea with honey. I will also consume chicken soup (also backed by science, although we're not entirely sure how it works yet).

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] issendai at WARNING: Purina pet food has started making pets ill

My coworker John told me that his cat was seriously ill--throwing up, lethargic, refusing food, dropping weight. The previously healthy 6-year-old, 15-pound cat had lost a third of her body weight over the last few months. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. Blood tests were clean, and she didn't have any known illnesses. Yet she was a few days from organ failure.

That was a week ago. She's fine now. The solution was... to stop feeding her Purina cat food.

When John told me that, and said that friends of his had the same problem with their cats and Purina cat food, I looked into it. Holy shit. Take a look at the consumer complaints about Purina cat and dog food. This exact same problem has been an issue with Purina pet foods since 2007, but since this summer, the rate of complaints has picked up drastically. People who previously had to problems with Purina are reporting issues. Comment after comment sounds the same:

I've been feeding my three cats Fancy Feast canned food Chopped Grill Feast for many years. They have always devoured their meal and licked the plates clean. Last week, I noticed they did not want to eat much and went from plate to plate, ate a little. Next day, none of them would eat it. I kept trying new cans. What they did eat made them vomit and one cat was lethargic for days. I refuse to buy any more of this food. It's very scary. I don't know what is wrong with the food, but I fear it has toxins in it. I switched to another brand and the cats are fine now. Did anyone else experience this?

-----

My dogs have been eating Purina Dog Chow (green bag) for about four years. They used to eat only Iams, but due to financial issues, we had to go with a cheaper brand. The last bag I purchased was about a week and a half ago. My 14 years old Labrador has vomited about 5-6 times and my German Shepherd has vomited about 4 times. Something is wrong with this food! The food has a kind of metallic smell to it. It just does not smell right. I'm taking it back to the pet store. I am changing my dogs' food, it's just not worth taking the chance to save a few dollars.

-----

We purchased a large bag of Purina One Salmon dry cat food to give to a needy pet owner. She emailed us a couple of days later ,to say that there were maggots, lots of them with what looked to be like strands or webs with more dead gnats or flies, pieces of web in the food and "shells" of gnats or flies in the bag. Cats would not eat much of the food and, fortunately, they did not get sick. The store had noticed this problem in other bags and was willing to swap out.

-----

I purchased a 34 lb bag of Purina One Smartblend dog food every three to four weeks for my two Labradors. The last bag I purchased seemed fine until I noticed a new infestation of little black bugs. Upon further inspection through the contents of the bag, I noticed clusters of white "eggs" adhered to quite a bit of the food. Some of these clusters contained larvae in the process of hatching. I immediately threw out the remaining contents of the bag but did save samples for my vet.

We went out of town last weekend and had friends dog sit for us. We originally attributed their lethargy and random vomiting to separation anxiety. Although they are doing better, I am still concerned and will be watching them closely. As stated, I saved samples of the infested dog food for our vet in the event that anything results from this issue.

-----

I recently switched to the Friskies Poultry Variety pack (32 cans) that says it must be used by August 2013 (12281789 09:31 lo61237) sku (050000454242). I have 5 cats and feeding them this food, I noticed some of them throwing up. There's nothing in it but liquids, no hair ball, no food, nothing. My cats range from 8 weeks to 13 years old.

I switched my own cats to Purina a couple of months ago, and their coats look so much better than they did on the old brand of cat food... but Buffy has started vomiting stomach liquids. Purina and Fancy Feast are off the menu. Permanently.

I have no idea why this isn't news. But if you're feeding your pets any Purina brand, please don't wait for media confirmation that something is going on. Stop feeding your pets Purina immediately.

Renowned Rocker Samus is returning from the wrong coast this Rockin' Wednesday for a special appearance! So all of your Rockin' ladies and gents should come over and get your Rock Band on. 7 - 11 PM at my place (directions available upon request).
brynndragon: (more cowbell)
I got a ton of cheap candy (along with cheese and crackers for those who are not sugar-inclined), please come help me eat it while we rock out! Tomorrow at my place, 7 - 11 PM.
brynndragon: (more cowbell)
If you want to come over and play Rock Band tonight, give me a call at (617) 383-4455 by 5 PM. Otherwise I might not be here, and then you won't be able to rock, and that would be sad.

This is so not OK! I mean, unless they really want the number of deaths in their state to skyrocket (both from miscarriages and from women who don't receive medical abortions solely to save their lives) and feel a need to fill their jails with women being charged with manslaughter. Actually, the later would certainly account for why the state Attorney General approves of this plan, especially if he receives political donations from for-profit jails. . .

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

  1. Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.
  2. If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.
  3. You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.
  4. Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

So. . . I don't know what to think of this post regarding the Occupy movement. Thus I ask for your opinions: what do you think?

Tonight is Rosh Hashannah in addition to being Rockin' Wednesday, so there will be apples and honey, apple cider donuts, and a round challah to celebrate the holiday as we play Rock Band. If you're thinking of coming by tonight to join in the festivities (any time between 7 and 10 PM), let me know :).
brynndragon: (more cowbell)
If you want to play Rock Band with me tomorrow night, please let me know by tomorrow at noon. Thanks!

I am absolutely astounded by this epic tale first spun in the WoW forums by a Narrator and myriad players working at it ZORK-style. I humbly present to you:

You awaken in Razor Hill

Tomorrow night's Rockin' Thursday will be [livejournal.com profile] samus_aran's Farewell Tour, as she will be leaving us for the Wrong West Coast. So please come by to say goodbye - there might even be cake. 7 - 11 PM at my place (private message or e-mail me for directions).

For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

With temperatures heading toward triple digits, I would like to remind people that Rockin' Thursday includes all the central A/C you can sit in. You don't even have to play Rock Band, you simply need to be willing to be in a space where others are playing (and tolerate someone offering you an instrument/microphone now and again). So come on down and get your groove on, or at least sweat a little less, at my place on Thursday evening, any time from 7 to 11 PM.
brynndragon: (more cowbell)
Tonight is Rockin' Thursday, and in celebration of my new job I will ensure that, along with the ordering of pizza, there will be seasonal fruit available for consumption (y'all know what happened to the cake ;P). So it'll be Rock Band 3 and Beatles, pizza, and fruit - almost too much awesome for one living room. But there's always room for the awesome you bring, anytime between 7 and 11 PM tonight, to my place.
brynndragon: (Default)
OK, so I'm only Google+. I have invites, but they way Google is letting people join is wonky enough that even sending someone an invite doesn't mean they get in. So please ask, but know that it's still a bit of a crapshoot - rumors include better likelihood with Gmail addresses, better likelihood if that person is already in your Circles, etc, but that's purely speculation.

For folks who are already there, if you can't find me, send me e-mail (the LJ address should work) and I'll give you my full name.

I'm still job-hunting, and expanding my search to include medical front desk/administrative work (the administrative side of what I do for my own practice, so it's something I want more focused experience in anyway) as well as biotech, and part-time just about anything within my abilities. Please let me know if you or anyone you know might want to hire me.
brynndragon: (more cowbell)
There will be Rockin' Thursday this week and next week after all! Tomorrow, come on by anytime between 7 and 11 PM and play Rock Band to your heart's content (and/or watch other people playing Rock Band - groupies have always been a part of Rockin' culture ;). There might be some mess still from the impromptu moving, but it will not get in the way of our Rockin', I promise!
brynndragon: (Bad Idea)
I just had a horrible idea: a filk called The Devil Went Down to the Internet, involving musical internet memes instead of traditional American fiddle tunes. My fiddle skills are not up to actually doing it, but I'm pretty sure it would have to involve Nyan Cat, Hamster Dance, and Numa Numa.
brynndragon: (more cowbell)
Until our new housemate Mat gets to have his own room, there really isn't the space in the living room for proper Rockin'. So I'm hereby cancelling Rockin' Thursday for the rest of June. Do not despair, for Rockin' shall return in July, when our central air will make it extra awesome :).
