Paypal should DIAF

Dear Paypal,
When your security measures prevent me from dealing with the fact that my Paypal account got hacked by asking me to do things I can not do because my account got hacked, you fucking lose. Forever.

I can't even close my account because in order to do so I need to provide the full credit card number (and let me tell you how reassuring *that* is) for the credit card I canceled because my account got hacked. Is there any alternative to Paypal?

I've never seen anything with the width of adoption that PayPal has.

A couple years ago, at Arisia, one of the dealers thought [livejournal.com profile] ultimatepsi was committing fraud, because her PayPal payment was cancelled. Turns out, PayPal found the purchase wildly out of character and automatically deemed it fraud, and cancelled it for her protection.

Oops.

Paypal has gotten way overzealous in its pre-fraud procedures, while being slow as hell and nigh useless to actually resolve real fraud (such as what happened to me). I think it might be skewed against sellers as well, which is why the dealer got so upset.

Hrm. What about Google Checkout?

That's a possibility, although I'm not so trusting of Google right now. Thank you.

actually, technically Paypal should
DIAF, F
that is
die in a FUCKing fire.

The way you punctuated it, it reads Die in a Fire, Fucking.

PayPal also doesn't sufficiently protect against incompetent sellers. I had a shipment get stolen once, I think it was shipped UPS. UPS wouldn't let me start a claim, only the shipper could do so. The seller wouldn't respond to my communications. When I asked PayPal to refund my money, the seller finally responded saying "here's evidence that I shipped it, I'm under no obligation to start a claim with UPS" and PayPal agreed with the seller. What should have happened was the seller should have taken 5 minutes to start a claim, gotten back the value of the object from UPS, and refunded my money. I'm just shocked that (a) the seller didn't want to take the five minutes to be a decent human being, and (b) that PayPal supported them.

I don't use PayPal to send money any more, though I'm willing to receive money that way (since there's no other way for me to receive credit card money). I don't use UPS to ship (although it's actually the receiving from them that's problematic, I still don't want to give them my money).

Paypal can fuck itself. I avoid using them as much as often as humanly possible.

Paypal used to be one of my clients when I worked at Big Blue. I never found such a bunch of prima donnas unfamiliar with the banking regulations that were supposed to be keeping them in check. If they didn't like having something too regulated, they moved it to the eBay side of the same office.

I use them when I have to, but otherwise I'm not interested. I know they don't have the fear of the FTC that they should. They need real competition -- it's money, not boudin from overseas.

Depends on what you use Paypal for. I recently learned of what seems to be an intriguing alternative for paying people online w/o a Paypal account or a regular debit or credit card: American Express gift cards. They cost ~$5 ea, and you can put up to $200 on them. Available at Shaw's in Porter Sq. You can pay cash and basically have an anonymous disposable credit card. Or so theory goes. Usable anywhere American Express is accepted.

There is another paypal, used in almost as many countries... I can't remember the name though. There's info on it online.
