The airport security areas where I've seen the porno tubes have them situated between and behind a couple of metal detectors (so they form the points of a triangle), but still within the length of the conveyor belt for personal items. You wouldn't've missed them if they were there.
Well, when you're asking why what you're really asking is, "How is this not a violation of the 4th Amendment of our Constitution, which protects against unreasonable searches?" Because holy shit is this a 4th Amendment violation.
