brynndragon: (A Very Spider Xmas)
You know what? Fuck each and every one of you who thinks that quoting MLK and talking about how sad it is that someone got killed and poo-pooing the people celebrating in DC and New York is the only proper reaction to what happened last night. It is *not* the case that every time someone acts as if they're not even the slightest bit glad that Osama Bin Laden is dead, an angel gets their wings.

This is me killing the Buddha in the road: humans are complex beings who can and do feel jubilation and sorrow simultaneously, and holding one emotion up as a shining beacon while casting the other emotion into the dust does not make you enlightened.

So obviously, if sorrow is truly what you feel, that's fine. But if you've got joy in your heart that that asshole no longer walks on this beautiful blue-green ball, it doesn't make you a bad person. I too feel that joy in my heart, with a fierceness reserved for someone who maybe could have redeemed himself. . . but never even tried.

I could also mourn his passing. . . but right now, I have no desire to do so. The innocent men and women who died on that day nearly a decade ago, the innocent men and women who have been and still are caught up in wars not of their making, the heroes who try to help the innocents, and the heroes who fight to chose their own destiny rather than having destiny roll over them - they will have my mourning. Osama Bin Laden will have to wait his turn.

ETA: The MLK quote going around is almost definitely fake. Another reminder to check your sources. . .
