(I'm going to be making these posts daily, with LJ-cuts for the uninterested. The purpose is public accountability, so they will be set to "everyone".)
It turns out replacing the broken G string was almost exactly the same as doing so on a guitar and takes less than 5 minutes. Thanks to advice from lovely friends I decided to just replace that string tonight and do the rest of the strings one a day in this order: A, E, D (so there's not too much strain on one side of the fingerboard). Since I'd already decided my first week was going to be dedicated to daily tuning that works out quite well - the new strings will need repeated tuning anyway :). Tonight I also played a scale just for kicks and to see if I remember where to put my fingers (there's cheater-tape on the fingerboard, but I did mostly remember anyway). I don't know which scale it was, probably either G or C - I need to refigure how musical notation corresponds to finger placement. Maybe I'll print myself out some music sheets just to play with. . .
