I was at GBM yesterday and saw they had some lids I'd never heard of - Shark helmets. They fit me better than my current Shoei (apparently my head is not so round as I thought ;P) and they have an XS in stock (and all their in-stock Sharks are 15% off right now). It's a little girly (OTOH, I appreciate the tai-chi-symbol-with-koi graphic ;), but that particular model has a good review from webBikeWorld (apparently Sharks are quite popular and respected over the pond). I'm thinking it's about time to replace my lid. . .

Shark does make some sweet helmets. That one appears to be at the low end of what they make, though. The one thing that jumps out at me but it is that it has plastic shell instead of composite. All of the best helmets are composite. That's not to say it isn't a decent helmet, but it is definitely a step down from what you are currently weaaring.

It's interesting you mention shell composition in light of this comment in the webBikeWorld article:

Some motorcyclists have been deliberately choosing helmets with thermoplastic shells recently; a choice based on the Motorcyclists magazine report on helmet impact absorption (see the wBW Motorcycle Helmet FAQ page for more information). My feeling is that one should study the matter carefully before making a crucial decision of this nature; just because a motorcycle helmet has a thermoplastic shell doesn't necessarily mean it will absorb impact in the safest way possible.

My conclusion is it's not something I can easily use to decide for or against a helmet - the standards are going to be more useful for my decision and ECE is certainly good enough for me.

Motorcyclist's article was junk journalism, but I have said that many many times before. I won't go into the reasons unless you want me to.

What I said about high end helmets holds true even if you take that article as gospel. The helmets that meet the spec that they lauded as being the absolute best in the original article (before they cut out the parts that disgreed with their conclusion) are all composite. All of them.

Like I said, I'm sure it's a decent helmet, but I would lay large amounts of money tht it isn't as good aa helmet as your current one. And dont take my use of "decent" the wrong way. I'd feel safe putting my head in it, I'd just feel I would be safer wearing the Shoei or a higher end Shark.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to get the high-end Shark helmet with magical shell polymer of awesomeness, but I can't afford $700 worth of anything right now ;P.

I've been wearing Shark for 3 years. I switched from Shoei and will never look back.
